A Variety Concert 'Fit for Heroes'

The Queens Theatre Hornchurch was the venue chosen by Producer Bandsman Tom Hoyles for the second variety show produced for the Romford Corps Friendship Club on Wednesday 7th September 2011. Supported by The London North East Fellowship Band under the leadership of Bandmaster Ken Hillson, Compere Major James Williams of THQ presented a varied and thrilling programme of fun and music in which the audience participated with great enthusiasm. Other performers were William Byrne, tenor and David Stanley , piano. A Prayer for the afternoon was made by Major Sarah Evans and A ‘Pause for Thought’ was led by Major. Mel Robinson who outlined the work of his mission for the people of Rumania, explaining how Jesus command to Peter to ‘feed my lambs’ (John 21:15-17 ) motivated him to undertake the work of his mission.
The afternoon was organised as a fund raising event for the charities ‘Help For Heroes’ and ‘The Work of The Salvation Army In Rumania’. Playing to a near theatre capacity audience allowed the presentation of a cheque for £1000 to be made to each of the charities by Major David Evans, C.O. of Romford Corps.
The concert was rounded off with a further item by the band and items by pupils of The Eastwood School who are studying performing arts under the tutelage of David Stanley, who then led an enthusiastic and cheering audience to a climactic sing-along of old favourites including Lily Marlene, There’ll Be Bluebirds Over The White Cliffs of Dover and We'll Meet Again. A wonderfully successful afternoon which was thoroughly enjoyed by all. With such a resounding success, a third concert is already under consideration for next year.

Salvation Brass Visit Romford

Article by Geoff Fuller
Salvation Brass witnessing in Romford Town Centre
Saturday 16th July saw the arrival in Romford of 'Salvation Brass'. This is a group from all parts of the country who get together to spread the word of the gospel through praise and worship. The media is the brass band. We were blessed, inspired and entertained by this group, who presented an evening of diverse music along with testimonies as to how Jesus came into their lives and the reason they are prepared to give up their time to spread the gospel in this way. The music was modern foot tapping , exciting and designed to give you a lift, contrasted by music designed to make you think and to raise our awareness of things more spiritual, The music, spoken word and bible readings were supported by an imaginative audio -visual experience.Sunday morning the band led our all age worship, reaching to all ages. Time was given to the younger members of our congregation . Again during this time, inspired music brought us into the presence of God.
Sunday afternoon despite the inclement weather the band visited the town centre to do two open air services. Music to attract the passing shoppers proved to be very popular, many people stopping to listen and also taking the literature we had to offer. Drama was also on offer to get the message that God Is there for everyone if only we would stop and listen to his voice. The Sunday was rounded off with a praise meeting in our church where again our spirits were lifted and leaving us wanting more. Many people would have a good start to their week because of the blessing received by this group, who want to live out the experience of Jesus in their lives by presenting it to other people through the medium of the brass band.Photos of Salvation Brass in Romford can be found by clicking here.

Romford's Got Talent!

Article by Cal Landles

Romford's Got Talent, this year surpassed even last year's amazing evening

Locals were treated to a touch of the celebrity this week when ‘Britain’s Got Talent’s more prestigious, more renowned, more... local, sister show ‘Romford’s Got Talent’ came to Romford Salvation Army.

The crowd, who took their seats eager with anticipation ready for an evening of fun, laughter and the occasional boo thrown in for good measure all compered expertly by the ever popular Ant & Dec (Ollie & Chris Goldsmith). Now of course no talent show is complete with out it’s judges and this was no different. No expense was spared as Simon Cowell (Neil Rebeugeot), Amanda Holden (Lorraine Barry) and Michael McIntyre (Adam Sewell-Jones) took a night off from slumming it in their dressing rooms in theatre’s up and down the country to the luxury of a good old fashioned Salvation Army fold down table complete with working buzzers and cushioned chair. (Unconfirmed reports suggest the judges we’re blown away by such extravagance.)

And just as the judges were treated to that extravagance, the crowd too were treated by being witness a long line of talented acts.

The bar was set high straight from the first act but in the end proved too high as Romford YP Band bravely attempted a vocal rendition of the well known ‘Star Lake’ but this proved too taboo for the judges who buzzed them out soon after starting. To stave off early worry that talent may just be lacking the very talented Bethany took to the stage to give her rendition of an Amy Winehouse number and wow’ed the judges and audience alike and immediately became an early favourite for the crown.

Various items followed, from poems, ballad singing, Piano Recital, a masterclass of how to break dance from no doubt future dance superstar, Callum Barry, a excellently delivered flute solo from Phoebe Sewell-Jones and a song from music man Mike on his guitar.

Crowd highlights on the night came from a Father and Daughter act who had the crowd whipped into a laughing frenzy, ‘The Duncan Ensemble’, a three piece made up of Accordion player Denis, tin whistle player Rhys and ably led by the talented Duncan on bass drum, are rumoured to be locked in talks to kick off a UK tour later this year so watch out for that.

Completing the highlights from the evening were Simon & Abby who delivered a musical mash up, a couple of piano items from Joe and Grace, Scarlet with her own unique rendition of the classic ‘supercalifragilisticexpialidocious’, a dance routine that would put Cheryl Cole to shame from Alisha and a song written and performed by Charlotte Stannett. And the evening was concluded by a brass band select led by up and coming bandmaster and local salvationist, Roddy.

After much deliberation, the judges who were arguably too nice on the night, came to a popular decision that young Alisha had done enough to take the Romford’s Got Talent 2011 crown. Runners up were:
1st. Alisha - Dance
2nd. Charlotte Stannett
3rd. Duncan Ensemble
4th. Bethany
5th. Paige and Alistair Hassard

A good night was had by all and I’m there are people already planning and rehearsing for next years show, hoping to steal Alisha’s title of Romford’s Got Talent winner.

Visit of West Midlands Youth Band

The West Midlands Youth Band During the Open Air
Article by Mike Willmore

The sun had got its hat on for the weekend of the 9th April, which was made even hotter by the visit of forty of the West Midland’s finest young Salvation Army musicians, led by Mark Sharman, to the Salvation Army here at Romford.

Within a short time of arriving on the Saturday afternoon, the band was out on the streets of Romford witnessing and entertaining hundreds of passers by in the Romford shopping centre for an hour, before returning for a welcome meal and preparing for their evening concert.

The audience for the evening concert was entertained by a variety of music, which ranged from the introductory ‘To a God like This’ by John Larsson, to music from the film ‘Pirates Of The Caribbean’. The Band was supported by Romford’s Singing Company, supplemented by congregational singing and band accompanied solos by Callum White (cornet) Jonathan Evans (trombone) and Sam Ellis (xylophone). An altogether enjoyable evening for all in attendance.

Sunday morning was again led by the West Midland Youth Band, the theme being ‘The Light of the World’, inspired by Holman Hunt’s painting and Dean Goffin’s band piece of the same title. The service was also supported by The Romford YP Band, playing ‘Friends Of Jesus’- a piece composed by Romford Band Leader Dale Caffull, and by the Romford Singing Company.

During the service, Major David Evans conducted a blessing and thanksgiving on the thirty year marriage of Elaine and Garry Barnes, who had been married at Romford. Elaine is the daughter of Col. Grace Bevan who read ‘The Love Chapter’ (1 Corinthians 13).

Dean Goffin’s Band Piece, ‘The Light Of The World,’ had proved inspirational in the lives of several of the Youth band member’s lives, and three gave very moving testimonies to this effect, additionally blessed by a seeker coming to the Mercy Seat.

The evening service led by Stuart Farmer... once again, maintained a dynamic and invigorating approach with pieces such as ‘Dance Like David’ and ‘Amazing Race’ The band was supported by Romford Songsters who sang ‘There’s Never Been a Mountain’. Following a period of devotion, the evening was brought to a resounding conclusion with ‘Shalom’

As with all festivals and services, they do not happen without enormous effort by both the participating visiting section and host. This weekend was no exception. Votes of Appreciation were proposed by Major Evans for Romford and Band Leader Mark Sharman for the West Midlands Youth Band, with very especial thanks to all those who had worked so hard to provide the catering services for so many and played such an important part in sustain the octane levels of all the participants.

Thanks to everyone for such a great weekend.

A Climate of Change

Joe Hall
Article by Mike Willmore

Joe Hall is a well respected Christian young man who has been part of our Corps (church) family since birth. He is now 16 years of age and studying for his A levels at a local school.

On the evening of Sunday 27th February we gathered to hear Joe give his take on the ecological problems facing every person living on planet earth, now and in the future. The immediate dilemma was climate change, the major cause of which has almost certainly been precipitated by the way we humans are abusing the resources of the planet through our means of production and use of wasteful use of scarce resources without regard for the damage which has become so evident of late. It is also obvious that those who would be the hardest hit by the deterioration caused by climate change would be the poorest, wherever in the world they may be. He also gave a number of biblical references which make it quite clear that the world is God’s and we are merely custodians. As Christians we all have a duty to preserve the gift of the world and life around us to the best of our ability.

In 2009 Joe visited Zambia on a trip partially sponsored through the International Development Office of the Salvation Army. The trip was funded through public donation and young people of the Salvation Army, who formed the working party to assist in improving standards of living for local people in the some of the villages. They each showed their individual commitment to the project by paying their own travelling expenses through their own fund raising efforts. Already being interested in, and wanting to help in, alleviating the needs of those less fortunate than himself, the trip brought home the reality of poverty and the health needs of people especially in respect of providing adequate food and clean water. This further fired up his enthusiasm and determination to bring the need for preservation and minimising the waste of scarce resources, not only in these foreign places where the difficulties were so obvious, but also here, in the UK, where we have created an environment that actually cuts us off from the environment. As Joe pointed out, in the west, at the present rate we are using resources, we need three planets the size of the earth sustain our current use of resources. That, of course, means that the west is depriving the poorest part of the world to feed its own voracious and virtually insatiable appetite, whether that be animal, vegetable or mineral. We take scarce resources in huge quantities from the earth, waste much, and pollute the atmosphere with the way we use them. We are destroying the lungs of the world by recklessly destroying huge swathes of rain forest for personal monetary profit for entrepreneurs and, unfortunately, these activities are often ignored by many Governments, because, to do try to do something about it may not only be seen as being undiplomatic, but may deprive the national economies of tax and other revenues.

Joe’s main point of the meeting was to reaffirm that each of us has a responsibility to do our bit. There were four main phases:

First – To recognise and accept that the problems exist, and that they are probably man made.

Secondly – For each of us to reduce our own use of scarce resources and save waste.

Thirdly - To respond by giving our own time money and voice to campaigns to raise the profile of the problem and promote resolution.

Fourth - To actively campaign individually.

Joe expressed his thanks to those present for their support and hoped that the meeting might provide a spring board for further activity in the corps to promote a deeper and more passionate effort in us all to improve the environment and be more appreciative of the wonderful world that God has given us.

An Evening With Daniel Roberts

Article by Mike Willmore

In September 2010, Daniel Roberts moved to Romford with Officer parents Jonathan and Jayne Roberts and sister Rebecca, when Jonathan took up his appointment as Secretary for Mission in Europe at The Salvation Army International Headquarters, London. Daniel has two other sisters living away from the family home. The older is Sonia, who is studying Maths at London University and Joanna, who is completing her 'A' level studies in Nottingham. We look forward to meeting them in the not too distant future.

Daniel began teaching and performance work in the London and Essex areas. Since his arrival he has become actively involved in the musical worship of the corps, playing regularly in Sunday services and with various musical groups such as the Worship Band, Songsters, and Singing Company. Future plans include recitals in London and Essex venues, playing solo recitals and chamber music with fellow musicians.

Sunday the 20th February saw an audience of over 50 across a wide spectrum of ages gather for an evening piano recital to be given by Daniel. Our newly refurbished hall has provided an excellent venue for piano recitals in the past, and this one was particularly eagerly anticipated.

The works he played included a collection of 8 short Poetic Waltzes, by Enrique Granados (1867-1916) each with their own character and expressing moods of joy, humour, sentimentality and melancholia. As Daniel says, 'The music is a great pleasure to listen to and deserves more recognition than it currently has'.

The second, and shorter piece was by Mozart (1756-1791) composed in 1792 and entitled 'Fantasia No3 for Solo Piano Opus 58'. A dramatic composition of operatic style which Daniel describes as 'taking the listener from darkness into light'.

The third and longest piece of the evening was by Chopin (1810- 1849) who, as Daniel says, 'is reputed to be the best known musician who exposed the endless potential of the piano, and stretched the boundaries of technical skill in performance'. Daniel played 'The Sonata in Bm'; A piece in four movements, being at times highly virtuosic, and yet having lyrical sections where the piano is given the opportunity to sing. In the third Largo movement of the work much reflection and passion is felt in the music, before moving on to the dramatic Finale, which satisfyingly concludes the 25 minute work.

Having received rapturous applause, and to the delight of all those present, Daniel played an encore of Debussy’s Clair De Lune. The perfect end to a great performance that it was a pleasure to attend.

Daniel studied for his B.A. Music Degree at Leeds College of Music, one of the U.K.'s leading specialist conservatoires for music. Here he did a 3 year performance course, which included composition, and he gained a minor in conducting. At the end of his Degree in September 2009, Daniel received a scholarship to study for a week in Norway with the critically acclaimed Pianist Natalia Strelchenko. This was connected to the Egersund Youth Chamber Music Festival where Daniel also gave concerts and enjoyed living the Norwegian lifestyle!

Major Sarah Evans rounded off the evening with a vote of thanks for an excellent evening and we look forward to hearing much more from this very talented young man in the future.

New Adherent Welcomed

Brian Hampshire with Major David Evans

Article by Mike Willmore

On Sunday 23rd January 2011 the corps officially welcomed Brian Hampshire as a member of our corps family, when Major David Evans, our corps officer, enrolled him as an Adherent of the Corps.

To those who are not familiar with the term, an Adherent is a person who believes in The Lord Jesus Christ and seeks to follow and participates in the worship, fellowship, service and support of a local Salvation Army Corps and identifies with their Mission Statement.

Brian has been attending our corps meetings for several months now and has felt really blessed. He says :

My first contact with the Salvation Army was when my sister and I were evacuated to Kettering at the beginning of the second world war and we attended the local Salvation Army corps on Sundays. My second contact was as a soldier serving with the military in North Africa, having many a meal and cups of tea from the Red Shield canteens. A few months ago I met a lady on the same caravan site as myself who is a Salvationist. We became friends and consequently I started attending the meetings here at Romford. The welcome was overwhelming and the joy of the Lord in my heart is beyond measure.

We do welcome Brian into the fellowship of the corps and trust he will continue to enjoy the fellowship it offers for many years to come.

Should you be interested in any aspect of Corps membership or have any questions regarding the Salvation Army, please feel free to contact the corps officers or Administrator directly at The Salvation Army, High Street, Romford, RM1 1JJ. or by telephone on 01708 380208 or email - admin@romfordsa.org.uk

Christmas Present Appeal

The Salvation Army, one of the UK’s leading charities, is calling on kind-hearted people to help spread a little seasonal cheer to people in need this Christmas, by donating new toys and gifts to its Christmas Present Appeal. The Appeal is on this year from 20 November – 18 December.

Many of us have no idea what it feels like to have little or nothing under the tree on Christmas morning but in these difficult economic times, there will be children, families and older people in your community facing a bleak Christmas. By donating a new gift to the Christmas Present Appeal you could make a real difference and put a smile on the face of a child or lonely older person.

Making a donation to The Salvation Army’s Christmas Present is simple. Members of the public are invited to drop new, unwrapped gifts at The Salvation Army, High Street, Romford RM1 1JJ or at their local Superdrug store. A team of volunteers will then wrap the gifts and distribute them to referred children and families in the area through The Salvation Army’s own networks, local groups and social services. Last year, more than 150,000 gifts were collected and distributed across the UK. You can also bring your gift to our toy service, which will be held at The Salvation Army on Sunday 28th November at 10.30am.

The Salvation Army is also encouraging the public to get involved with the appeal by organising a gift collection at their workplace, gym, school, university, or sports team.

“Thanks to the generosity of people in Havering hundreds of local people have benefited from the gifts donated to The Salvation Army over many years. By giving a gift or starting a collection in your workplace you can help to make a real difference in someone’s life at Christmas,” said Major Sarah Evans.

The Salvation Army is an international church and charity that offers friendship, support and very practical help to people of all backgrounds, ages and need. Through its network of 800 churches and social service centres, The Salvation Army works with thousands of children and families and is perfectly placed to distribute the Christmas Present Appeal gifts to those people in society who are most at need at Christmas.

“For children and young people we need gifts such as soft and educational toys for the very youngest, to CDs, games and toys and accessories for older children. And please, don’t forget the teenagers, particularly the boys who sometimes tend to get left out of such appeals.

“If you have children or grandchildren, or nieces and nephews or young friends, think of what they might like in their Christmas stocking and consider buying one extra present and donating it,” said Major Evans.

For more information visit www.salvationarmy.org.uk/christmaspresent and follow The Salvation Army on Twitter @salvationarmyuk and Facebook.

* All donations are welcome, however we would like to stress that food items, used products and second-hand items are not appropriate for this campaign.

New Soldier on 'Back to Church' Sunday

Sunday 26th September was a special day for Romford Corps for two reasons - 'Back to Church Sunday', and Coral Dunnill-Gosling being enrolled as a Soldier.

A combination of these reasons led to a packed out main hall, as we joined in worship and encouraged Coral as she took on this new commitment.

Coral spoke of her spiritual journey through several other Churches, looking for the right one for her and her family.
After being introduced to Romford Salvation Army at the funeral of a family member four years ago, Coral and her family started coming full time.

Coral expressed her faith and trust in God for whatever may be up ahead, and summed up her feelings with a line of her chosen favourite song - 'From life's first cry to final breath, Jesus commands my destiny!'Coral Dunnill-Gosling

Meet the New Officers!

Majors David and Sarah Evans
Majors David and Sarah Evans with sons Jonathan and Gareth

Majors David and Sarah Evans have spent the last ten years as leaders in Wrexham, North Wales where they set up a busy community programme for families, the elderly, refugees and homeless people.
During this time David was also Mission Development and Ecumenical Officer for North Wales, working in partnership with other churches and faith groups.
They have a particular interest in mission, having seen growth in all their previous churches, as well as schools' work and the 24/7 prayer movement.
Most of their ministry has been in the leadership of local church congregations, but they have also been divisional youth leaders in East Anglia during the 1990s.
David is a member of The Salvation Army's national Ecumenical Council, while Sarah has been active as a Street Pastor in North Wales.

David has been a Salvation Army Officer for 26 years, and Sarah for 24 years.
Prior to ministry, they both studied at Bristol University and were teachers in West London. David and Sarah married in 1986, and have two sons: Jonathan, aged 18 and Gareth, aged 13.

They are keen to get to know the town and to develop The Salvation Army's ministry, working with other churches and voluntary agencies within the local community.

David said: "We count ourselves privileged to be able to follow on the excellent work of our predecessors Majors Richard and Ann Borrett, and look forward to being able to further develop the great work going on in the recently refurbished citadel in the High Street."

Sarah said: "We have found the ministry of The Salvation Army to be both relevant and contemporary wherever we have served, be that in Lancashire, North Wales, Norfolk or London, and we are looking forward to discovering the distinctive character of Romford and how The Salvation Army can better serve this community."

The official welcome meeting for the Evans family will take place at 10:30 on Sunday 5th September 2010.

Thursday the 8th July proved a great day for 150 members of the Romford Friendship Club and a further 200 folks from Wellingborough, Enfield, Hadleigh and Clacton who came out for a superb day by the sea.

Bandsman Tom Hoyles, Romford Friendship Club Secretary, had booked the Princes Theatre at Clacton-On-Sea to produce a show which featured The London North East Fellowship Band, leader Ken Hillson.
The show was compered with great skill and humour by Retired Officer’s Secretary, Major James Williams, who also provided the ‘thought for the day’ slot, blending humour with the serious thought that even in the worst of financially worrying times, his life experience had demonstrated that it was his relationship with Jesus Christ that had carried him through, and that relationship was available to all who would seek it.

Photo 1Photo 2Photo 3Photo 4

Also on the bill was pianist David Stanley, teacher from Eastwood School, who, as well providing a feast of popular music on piano, introduced Gemma Wahl, Georgina Blackwell and Samuel Holdworth, three young musicians from his school, providing them with great experience in preparation for going on to take ‘Performance’ at University in the near future.

The star of the show was undoubtedly Victoria Yellop, who, in a high octane virtuoso performance, played her violin and sang a selection of popular songs reminiscent of so many energetic ‘Last Night Of The Proms’ sing-along performances, which culminated with flag waving and clapping by the altogether happy and enthusiastic audience. Certainly a day to remember, and such a success that Tom is contemplating another show, possibly at The Queens Theatre, Hornchurch, next year.

New Soldier Enrolled

Our newest Soldier - Paul Singleton

Sunday the 4th July saw a new Soldier enrolled at Romford Salvation Army.

Paul Singleton had been coming to the Corps for some time, and after taking our 'Next Steps' course led by Major Brian Miller, he made the decision to become a Soldier.

After the enrolment, Paul spoke of the journey that had led him here - how he had been a Christian for many years, but fallen away from church and from God in recent times.
He told us how seeing his brother come to Christ reminded him of his need for God, and how he then found our church through this very website!

Paul told us that although he had never attended a Salvation Army before, it felt like he had finally come home.
He finished with a statement that is a challenge for us all - 'I want God to take me out of my comfort zone and use me'.

Congratulations, Paul!

Easter Celebrations at Romford - with a brand new Soldier

Article by Mike Willmore

View all the photos from Easter 2010

Easter is always a busy time at Romford Salvation Army , and this year was no exception.

Holy Week was launched with a day of prayer on Saturday, culminating in a Prayer concert led by Majors Gillian and Brian Miller. On Maundy Thursday, The Friendship Club (run by Bandsman Tom Hoyles) were treated to a special Easter Service at their afternoon meeting led by Major Richard Borrett with music provided by a small group of bandsmen and auxiliaries. The hall was full to capacity, and those present enjoyed a selection of Easter hymns/songs which have become standards world wide, including 'There Is A Green Hill Far Away' and the ever popular 'The Old Rugged Cross'.

Good Friday saw the band out again leading the Walk of Witness through the streets of Romford. This started with a gathering of the congregations of 'Churches In Romford' at Main Road Baptist, moving through four other churches along the route. Short services were held at Main Road Baptist, St Edward's Roman Catholic Church, then down through the busy market to St Edward's Anglican Church. From there, a short open air service and reading was held in the market square before proceeding to the final destination at Trinity Methodist Church where the service was followed with the opportunity meet with friends from all the churches present and share in some light refreshments. Altogether, an enjoyable and worthwhile witness and reminder to the people of Romford that it was Holy Week and that this major Christian festival remains central to the Christian faith and the followers of Jesus Christ.

Easter Sunday dawned bright and clear as people from our own Church and several others gathered on the hill at Upminster Common for the Sunrise Service. The ground might have been pretty muddy but the view from the top of the hill across London was the clearest it had been for many years, and contributed greatly to the feelings of uplift in the spirit that one always associates with Easter morning. Once again a contingent of the band provided the music for the service of celebration led by Major Borrett. This was followed by an Easter breakfast at the Salvation Army Hall.

The Easter Service itself was a double celebration. Not only was the resurrection of Jesus celebrated, but one of our most recent adherents, Kevin Foreman, had chosen this Easter day to advance his commitment to the Lord by entering into full soldiership with The Salvation Army. It was therefore with great joy that his commissioning ceremony was carried out by Major Borrett. Kevin related how he had come to soldiership through initially contacting Majors Ann and Richard to assist with the resolution of a problem. He had accepted an invitation to find out more about the Salvation Army and deepened his knowledge of the Christian faith through attending an Alpha Course held at the Salvation Army Hall. He also acknowledged the particular help and support he had received from Dale Caffull. Dale, in turn, testified to those present that he had supported Kevin with prayer over many months and felt that his coming to soldiership in this way was nothing short of a positive answer to his prayers.Kevin Foreman, our newest Soldier

The Easter Service was supported by the Senior Band, Songsters, YP Band, Singing Company and contribution from the Primary Sunday School. Altogether, an excellent and memorable Holy Week.

New Adherent

Article by Mike Willmore

Kevin Foreman welcomed as an Adherent

Sunday 10th January proved to be a Red Letter day for Kevin Foreman when he was welcomed by Corps Officer Major Richard Borrett as an Adherent at our corps here at Romford.

Kevin has been attending the Romford Corps for a little over a year, after his son Paul had become a Soldier. Through this connection, Kevin had sought advice from the Corps officers. Wishing to support Paul, but not wanting to participate or be involved in the meetings at that time, he sat out in the café where it is possible to see and hear all that is going on through the video link operating within the hall without becoming involved in the meeting itself. However, in doing so, his interest grew and he struck up a friendship with one of the corps members which gave him the confidence and desire to actually go in to a meeting. From that moment, in Kevin’s words, he never looked back. He started attending the corps meetings regularly, and within a relatively short time, knew many of the people who worshipped at the Corps.. His wife, Tricia, attended with him and with the coming of the New Year in 2009, both responded to a request for individual personal prayers. In February they felt that their prayers had been answered. From that day, as Kevin said, "I was amazed and felt that I had found something that had been missing in my life." He attended regularly from that time on and several months later was asked by Corps Officer, Major Ann Borrett, if he would like to become an Adherent. An Adherent in the Salvation Army is a person who accepts Jesus as Lord in his or her life and the beliefs of the Salvation Army and is willing to apply these to their life. It is effectively the Salvation Army equivalent of church membership. Kevin decided that he would like to know more about the Christian life and registered to attend an Alpha Course, which is an introductory course for those with an interest in knowing more about Christianity.

Having thoroughly enjoyed the course, Kevin was thrilled to accept the invitation to become and Adherent and, as He says, "Before I knew it, I was on the platform beaming and very proud to have become an Adherent, and will take part in as many activities at the hall as possible."

Kevin illustrated his point by running a very successful quiz on the evening of his enrolment. The Corps is very happy to welcome such an enthusiastic and valued member of our Romford Salvation Army Community. The day belonged to Kevin and the Corps have joyfully accepted this day to be known as ‘Kevinmas Day’ in honour of the occasion.

New Bible Study Details

The next Bible Study we will look at as a Corps will be based on the book 'Stop Looking For The Will of God' by Jeff Lucas.

God has created us, he allows us to choose our course. He gives us freedom to decide which direction our life should take.
But he also invites us to be sensitive to His plans for our lives.

Jeff Lucas shows us how we can rest in the knowledge that God has a plan for our lives, be ready and willing to respond to God's calls to specific tasks and be aware of the guidance He has already given us through His Word, The Bible.

Jeff encourages us not to get 'hung up' on finding God's will for our lives, but start seeking God Himself.

American Night at Stapleford Abbotts

Article by Mike Willmore

On Saturday 4th April 2009, the Romford Salvation Army Band visited St. Mary's Church in Stapleford Abbotts to provide an evening of music entitled 'An American Night'.

The weather had been dry, warm and sunny, which helped ensure a maximum turnout from the local population and a contingent of supporters from Romford.
As can be seen from the photographs, conditions could only be described as snug, which added to the great atmosphere within the Church.

Picture 1Picture 2

The music selection was introduced by Bandmaster Stewart Bristow who explained that all the music selected for the evening had American connections and a Spiritual dimension.
The programme of 13 items commenced with the march 'America', and included a variety of pieces such as 'Sweet Chariot' and 'Stars and Stripes Forever'.
Adam Sewell-Jones, accompanied by Chris Allen, provided a vocal solo, and Corps Officer Major Richard Borrett provided us with some thoughts.
The evening was brought to a resounding conclusion with 'Daniel'.

As always, the band's motto 'Music with a Message' was delivered in a very positive way, and was well received by a most appreciative audience who packed the church to the walls.

Helen Yousaf Returns to Romford

Article by Mike Willmore

On Sunday 29th March, Helen Yousaf received a spirited welcome when she revisited the Corps with her band of associates to provide a wealth of gospel music. Their music was presented with the obvious enthusiasm for their faith and love of the Lord Jesus with which they are obviously blessed.

Helen Yousaf

The evening was held in the café area of the hall, which was filled to capacity with around 150 enthusiastic Worshippers from our own congregation and several other churches.
The message for the evening was that 'Jesus is the Message'. Even if anyone feels unloved or unwanted, there is no cause for despair. Jesus has assured each one of us that God loves us to the degree that every hair on our heads are counted! As Christians, we have that positive message to share with all those with whom we come into contact.
Such was the enthusiasm for Helen and her fellow musicians, the Worship continued for some time after the meeting was officially concluded with a vote of thanks from Corps Officer Richard Borrett.

We are most grateful to Helen for a great evening of Worship, and wish her well with her future engagements.

Sharon Passes the Baton

Article by Mike Willmore

On Sunday 15th March, Sharon Goldsmith handed leadership of the Romford Songster Brigade over to Adam Sewell-Jones.

Sharon has been the guiding light of our Songsters here at Romford for the last 16 years and prior to that, Singing Company Leader for 11 years.
Always an inspiration for all of us at the Corps who had so long benefited from her musical talents and her enthusiastic qualities of leadership, it was with mixed feelings that Corps Officer Richard Borrett said a grateful thanks on behalf of the Corps, likening the next step in her Spiritual journey to receiving her own 'Marching Orders' from God.

Richard presented Sharon with a piece of art entitled 'Celebration', which was "inspired by Worship". A fitting gift for Sharon, who had not only been Songster Leader, but also co-ordinator of the Worship Cluster of the Corps.

Sharon responded to the vote of thanks and said that she had found the situation rather overwhelming. In relinquishing her positions at the Corps in order to assist her husband Phil in his ministry at Harold Hill, she felt her life to be blessed by God, and was privileged to have been used by God in such a way at Romford.
Sharon closed by quoting some lines of the song 'Lord, you've been good to me', which she felt were particularly relevant:

"So, may each breath I take,
Be for You Lord, only You.
Giving You back the life I owe.
Love so amazing, Mercy so free.
Lord You've been good,
So good to me."
